One swim stroke at a time...
over 50 years of helping children and adults with disabilities
Abilities United Aquathon epitomizes the vision of Abilities United: a society where people of all abilities learn, live, work, and play together creating greater fulfillment, benefit, and unity for everyone. It is a society where there are no barriers to the full inclusion and contribution of people with disabilities and their families.
The Aquathon is a community and team-building event where people of all walks of life, all ages and all abilities, swim side-by-side to help fund the training, education, and support that Abilities United provides to people with developmental and physical disabilities. All swimmers in the Aquathon become advocates of people with disabilities.
The Aquathon demonstrates and proves that all people, of any ability, can contribute to an effort and impact the final results.
Since 1978, the Abilities United Aquathon has grown from a staff run, grass-roots effort located in the Aquatic Services pool of Abilities United to a community wide event held at a public, accessible, outdoor pool in Silicon Valley. Approximately 200 swimmers, volunteers, and supporters of all abilities, swim in this fun relay to raise awareness of Abilities United services provided to individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
All Aquathon proceeds go directly to the Abilities United programs that provide services to thousands of individuals each year. The Aquathon has helped Abilities United expand or enhance these lifelong services to meet the changing needs of people with disabilities, including
- Adapted swim lessons
- Art program
- Computer education
- Inclusive preschool

- Integrated Living Program
