Services

Training is provided in community settings and emphasizes the critical skills needed for you to participate in relevant, functional, age-appropriate activities. Daily lessons are designed according to your needs to promote independence through education, recreation, exercise, and socialization. The activities stress interaction with others on a variety of levels and in numerous settings and are geared towards developing full participation in community life. These activities are divided into five main areas:

  • Community living
  • Communication
  • Social/recreational
  • Functional academics
  • Motor skills

Because it can be more difficult to learn in a traditional classroom setting, we utilize the community as a classroom to teach functional skills in the context of typical, relevant daily activities such as:

  • Community-based education in daily-living skills such as grocery and clothing shopping, public transportation usage, restaurant dining, social and recreational participation, as well as household tasks such as cooking, laundry, cleaning, and gardening.
  • Adult education classes on site or through the Palo Alto Adult School, as well as an Adaptive Physical Education class at a local YMCA. Special projects and activities include music and dancing, arts and crafts, swimming and horticultural therapy at Gamble Gardens and at the Abilities United Heritage Garden in Palo Alto.

Our goal is to help you achieve maximum independence in community living, education, communication, social/recreational, and motor skills. However, since each person has a different level of ability, independence will mean something different to each individual. Your personal choice and independence is of utmost importance. We encourage you to choose your own best possible future and to select goals that will move you toward that future supported and assisted by your family, friends, and Adult Day Activities. staff.

If we are not currently able to meet your individual needs, we will make a best effort to develop that service or find a resource within the community that will do so.
