Early Intervention

The Early Intervention Program offers in-home and center-based services for children from birth to three years old who have developmental delays or are at risk of delay. Our multi-disciplinary team of special educators and therapists provides structured developmental and educational opportunities. Parent participation and extensive family support are integral parts of this service.

Clients

The Early Intervention Program is an early intervention program for infants from birth to three years old, with developmental special needs, and their families. Parental participation is especially important at these early stages of a child’s life and our program stresses parental support and education. We serve families throughout the Bay Area. Non-English speaking families work directly with our Spanish, Tagalog, or Hebrew bilingual/bicultural staff.

Services

Abilities United's Infant development program is vendorized through the regional center and primarily serves children from Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The Early Intervention multidisciplinary team works with parents or care providers of infants to develop effective intervention strategies for each child.

  • You’ll develop your confidence and parenting skills while we work together to prevent and/or remediate developmental concerns.
  • Your child’s developmental activities are supplemented by individual occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy.
  • To fit your family and child’s needs, we offer both home-based and /or center-based intervention.
  • You’ll also find a tremendous amount of moral support from other parents in the program.
  • An Integrated Playgroup with friends and siblings is available so your child can play with children of all ability levels.

Results

Your child may have a variety of needs and our multidisciplinary team is equipped to serve those needs through professional training and experience in

  • Special education
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Nursing
  • Social work

Your language and cultural needs are met through our Spanish, Tagalog, or Hebrew bilingual/bicultural staff. Although our primary mission is to serve the specific needs of your child, we believe strongly in the intrinsic value of the family unit. Consequently, we spend a considerable amount of time working directly with the parents and family members to develop their parental skills. We serve the family and their needs so that in turn, the child’s needs are met.

How To Get Started

  1. Contact your local regional center for further information regarding eligibility. Children are made eligible for services at the program by their regional center and then referred to the program. Eligibility for the Infant Program is based on 0-3 Federal Eligibility guidelines and includes known disabilities and/or risk for disabilities.
  2. Once a child is made eligible for services by the regional center they are referred to the program by a social worker from that agency.
  3. The Early Intervention program will contact the family to schedule an observation/interview.
  4. Your child and family will come to the program for an observation/interview.
  5. After it is determined that your child should attend the program, an intake is scheduled.
  6. Services can begin when Abilities United receives an active Purchase of Service (POS) from the appropriate regional center.
