Official Rules
The object of the Abilities United Aquathon is for teams to swim as many laps as they can during a continuous, 30-minute relay. During the relay, laps will be counted for each team. Each lap consists of one 25 yd. width of the pool.
Participation
• To be eligible to swim and to receive a thank you gift, each swimmer must have paid the registration fee.
• Teams should have at least 6, and no more than 8 swimmers.
• Companies can form multiple teams.
• Requests for heat/starting times will be considered for teams submitting all registration fees by the deadline.
Swimming
• Heat and lane assignments are posted near the relay starting point. Lane numbers are posted on the back of lap counters’ chairs. Each team must check-in with their lap counter at 10 minutes before the starting time for their heat.
• Swimmers whose teams are racing or competing by time may not wear fins.
• The basic format is a continuous relay. Each team has the option of switching swimmers after each single 25 yard lap, or after two 25 yard laps, but must be consistent throughout the relay.
• Swimmers should swim in the same order throughout the race. If someone drops out, then the order is simply shortened by a person.
• Swimmers may use any swimming stroke, and may use assistance when climbing out of the pool. Swimmers must touch the wall with one hand before the next swimmer's feet can leave the pool's edge.
• Each heat will start with an air horn, and each heat will end 30 minutes later with an air horn. The number of laps swum will be marked off at the end of each heat, and partial quarter lengths will be added to the total to determine the winners of “most laps swum” award.
• No running starts are allowed. Diving starts are not allowed in Lanes 1-3
• There will be a 20 minute break between heats.
• Teams may place their own towels at each end of the lane for better traction.
Awards and Prizes
• Teams may register as Corporate or Community/Family Teams. Prizes will be awarded in each category.
• Final rankings of teams will be made by number of laps swum, and dollars raised in each of the two categories.
• Multiple teams of 6-8 swimmers each can be entered . To determine awards for number of lengths swum, totals will be calculated for each individual team. To determine fundraising awards, the combined amount of money raised by a group’s teams will be totaled.
